Auerbach Tonträger heißen ST. MICHAEL FRONT zum Label-Neustart willkommen

ST. MICHAEL FRONT
unterschreiben bei
Auerbach Tonträger
als erste Band des Label-Neustarts

ST.

Was ST.

Interview with ST. MICHAEL FRONT

KKM: Hello, thanks for taking the time to do the interview. How have you been coping with the last year or so? I hope you’re both coping well?
Brother Sascha & Matthias: Thank You for Your interest in ST. MICHAEL FRONT. We‘re doing
fantastic, thank You.

KKM: Can you give us any details of the new album, as yet, still untitled?

Brother Matthias: The album-title will be „Schuld Und Sühne“ (German for „Guilt And Punishment“), it will feature 9 fine, all new compositions, and will be released at the end of this year. If nothing crosses our plan!

KKM: From singing with the new label Prophecy Productions/Auerbach, can we expect anything different with new album? Perhaps there would be a change in production techniques or a different style creatively of the artwork?

Brother Sascha: The lyrics are very personal and carthatic. They affect my life, but also the lives of many other people we know.

Brother Matthias: PP/AT give us full support for our musical vision. This time, the lyrics will be completely in German language, and solely written by Brother Sascha, who simply spoke his mind in his mother tongue, so to say. This adds a nice feeling of old, abysmal German Schlager/Chanson of the 60s & 70s to it. Also, the sound is less electronic, more Phil Spectoristic, with the obligatory kettle-drum-usage, boyscout-guitar & trumpets of course……..with some German-TV-crime-theme-orientated melodies added. Prolonging the lyrical approach, the artwork will also be more „personal“ & in collaboration with the talented Irrwisch, who‘s been responsible for many cool cover art &graphics in the field of dark & extreme heavy metal derivats.

KKM: There was a post made on February 26th from the Facebook page which had a photo of St Michael Front in the studio creating new songs for the new album and you mentioned also that you were making songs for a future release, how do you differentiate between what you like for the new album and a future release, does the new album have a certain theme or style that must be maintained and further, do we have a long wait for the future release?

Brother M.: Yes, we‘re already in recording processes for a third album right now. It will also be in German language and the sound is an even-further progression of the sound we developped for „Schuld und Sühne“. In the end, the ST. MICHAEL FRONT-fan wants ST. MICHAEL FRONT, and we‘ll deliver. Working parallely on 2 albums is a good method to stay in the right MICHAELIC flow of creative confluence.

KKM: How are you as a band handling the pandemic, do you have a lot more free time that you’ve been looking for to be able to record or is it a worry/concern? How do you manage to cope with it?

Brother M.: We are very well taking the opportunity to contemplate & focus on our art & music. Also, this pandemic is a good time for sociopaths and misanthropes, who make a big part of our followers, and who sit at home, listening to our songs. Who would have thought 1 1/2 years ago, that we would have a time, where you can go out and don‘t have to cope with anyone, and even are allowed and it‘s normal to wear a cool face-mask. Strangely, some people are protesting this!

KKM: With this album being the 4th album due for release, is there plans for a full-length tour? (when restrictions and the current pandemic allow)?

Brother M.: It will be our 2nd album, if I counted right. We definetely have plans for a tour…someday!

KKM: What are your expectations/hopes for the new album and it’s release?

Brother S: We want to tour enough now after all these years!

KKM: As a duo- are there more frustrations or would you say it’s better as a duo than say a band with 6 members?

Brother M.: It‘s really great as a duo, less people, less fuss, more money for each! Also long soundchecks before the concerts can be very annoying….

Brother S: And we have a special kind of humor that other musicians often don’t understand.

KKM: With current restrictions and lack of tours- does it make creating the album any more difficult/easier than before restrictions?

Brother M.: Creating the album itself is easier.

KKM: I like the idea behind St Michael Front with also using the titles Brother Matthias and Brother Sascha. Was this a conscious choice to name the band this or were there other names on the table that you would’ve considered?

Brother M.: „ST. MICHAEL BRIGADE“, „ST. MICHAEL ARMY“, …the title „Brother“ comes from the deep respect for each other. Unity in the cause. And dedication.

KKM: St Michael is an angel with supreme power and has a birthday of September 29th but celebrated by Orthodox churches on the 9th. Here in the UK we have a celebration on the 29th, called Michaelmas Day where typically people have a feast with a plump goose, here in Scotland we have St Michaels Bannock which is like a large scone cake or bread cake. Not one for eating meat but it’s said this is a tradition from Queen Elizabeth 1. Do you happen to celebrate St Michaels Day and is there any celebrations that you enjoy for it?

Brother S: The Michaelis Festival was very important to me as a child. I was baptized in Michaeliskirche, my mother is called Michaela and my father is called Michel. The angel Michael was a warm, trustworthy figure for me as a child who created a deep bliss in me. In the anthroposophical teaching there is „Michaelic thinking“. Later, after severe strokes of fate, St. Michael was for me the conqueror of the demons I had to face and often had to protect me from, in a figurative sense. Then I realized that I had developed a kind of „Heavenly Wrath“ that I could translate into creativity and art many times. But “heavenly anger” can also induce a sense of retribution in oneself, especially in the face of injustices and atrocities committed by humans. Like the image of St. Michael in the apocalypse with scales in hand. Fortunately, however, I always go back to my childhood.

KKM: For the cd- which comes first for recording- lyrics or the music line?

Brother M.: First the music – we extract the chord-progression for each song from a special, esoteric formula, that we developped.

Brother S: After we have the melody, I write the lyrics alone and usually in a single night.

KKM: Have any of the new songs surprised you in terms of recording that took a direction and become different or better than you imagined? Would you be able to tell us more about it?

Brother M.: This happens sometimes due to our special guest-musicians. For example „Knochen Und Blut“ („Bones And Blood“), which will be the opener for the album, got much of its heavy, solemn character because of the cool percussions, involving a real „bone-sack“ shaking.

1000 Namen“ („1000 names)“ used to be a swifty cowboy-song, but became a solemn kosack-hymn-style piece in the studio. You will like it!

KKM: With the upcoming releases and already released singles- do you or the label choose which songs will be your singles?

Brother M.: I think they will be chosen in collusion. Prophecy are very cool & open-minded people.

KKM: I have listened to the new songs on YouTube from the new upcoming album “Schwarzer Engel” and “So Weit Nach Draussen” and there seems to be the same familiar common theme/sound from the previous albums but also… more progressed, has the influences changed at all or is there a change or influence you have had that makes this album so different but still keeping the roots of St Michael Front?

Brother M.: As mentioned before, the album will have some signature-features of the ST. MICHAEL sound, but with German lyrics about revenge & self-discovery…… and TV-thriller-melodies for example

KKM: As musicians- what do you prefer more? Studio and production or tours and festivals?

Brother S: Tours and Festivals. Life in Hamburg can be very boring. That is why it is very exciting for us to go on a journey and gain new followers for us and also get to know them. Music also has something religious about it. With the lights and the show, all of pop music is structured like a kind of substitute messiah.

Brother M.: Studio & production. Or contemplating on music. And notes. And sound.

KKM: To cope with the uncertainty of the pandemic- bands are turning to things such as Patreon and Getnext etc- is this something that would be considered for St Michael Front?

Brother S & M.: Never heard of this, what is it? Something like Youtube?

KKM: What do you think separates this album from the rest on the alternative genre?

Brother S: All the German-speaking alternative (“Indie“) musicians that I have met to this day were, for me, fluffy, slimy, self-indulgent poppers in anoraks. Especially here in Germany. We are not richkids who have postnatal disorders. But I think the band “Guided by Voices” is sensational. They don’t come from here either.

Brother M.: You won‘t hear our sound anywhere else. Some would simplifyingly describe it as a hybrid of Darkfolk, occult Schlager & psycho-delic.

KKM: Do you like the contact with fans at gigs with meet and greets etc or do you prefer just to play and create music? I know just now such things are limited but out with pandemic restrictions?

Brother S: It is very interesting for me to find out how many people with sincere hearts are still out there.

Brother M.: Normally, I don‘t like contact with people, but at concerts there are mostly like-minded people….there it is very cool!

KKM: At the end of a gig/tour when you get home, what is your next few days normally like? The mad rush to get unpacked or do you go straight to catching up with housework etc?

Brother S.: I drive to the sea with my cat.

Brother M.: Housework.

KKM: What has been both a highlight so far in St Michael Front and what are things that you would’ve done differently?

Brother S: It was a stroke of fate that we met at the art conservatory.

Brother M.: Meeting like-minded souls & connect in music is spiritual.

KKM: Given St Michael is an angel with supreme powers, what values and rules etc do you like to live life by?

Brother S: I can’t stand injustice and I always stand by the weak. I hate “stylers” from music, theater, art, film etc. who think they are something better. Still, I have to be careful not to get lonely out of social hatred.

Brother M.: Michael is the angel with the sword to fight the evil forces. Get your job done. The evil forces can be within yourself.

KKM: What do you care about most currently and is there anything with troubles you?

Brother M.: Getting our music out. Fear of getting it out not soon enough.

KKM: Quickfire round:

Favourite current book/movie?

Brother S.: Book: Gebrüder Löwenherz; movie: Ren & Stimpy… & Man Bites Dog

Brother M.: Book: Mishima „Under the storm-god“ (only got the first third of it finished yet); movie: „Tanz der Totenköpfe“ (Haunting of Hill-house, 1972) …at the moment

KKM: If you could have 3 wishes, what would they be?

Brother S: The almanac with all lottery results up to 2050. / Retractable angel wings with which I can fly like an eagle / Eternal health

KKM: Do you have any strange habits? Such as the tv needs to be an even number, you need to check a handful of times the door is locked etc?

Brother S: Hahaa I already had these ticks. Sometimes I skip stairs that have something on them. Well, I’m still afraid of flying.

KKM: If you had the choice to be able to pick between talking with animals or knowing every language in the world, which would you pick?

Brother M.: Talking with animals.

Brother S: Me too!

KKM: If you could choose only one meal to have as dinner for the week- which meal would you choose?

Brother S: Chestnut soup.

Brother M.: Gulasch.

KKM: Thank you for the interview and I wish you all the best for the future.
