Interview mit Malachy Tuohy von The Riptide Movement zur VÖ: „ Getting Through“
KKM: Im Internet kann man lesen, dass eure Geschichte durch eine Fernsehwerbung begann? Wie war das damals? Habt ihr euch schon vorher gekannt und seid ihr privat befreundet? Wen zählt ihr jetzt alles zu eurer Band und wie entstand euer Bandname?
The Riptide Movement: „All Works Out“ wurde von der Bord Failte (Irish Tourist Board) für ihren TV-Spot ausgewählt, das war ausgezeichnet!!! Es hat den Song an die Massen gebracht. Das Irish Radio sprang auf den Zug auf und das Album „Getting Through“ ist dadurch entstanden. Ah ja, wir alle sind zusammen aufgewachsen und sind Freunde aus unserer Schulzeit. Alle unsere Familien sind gute Freunde und Nachbarn!!!
Gar Byrne spielt Schlagzeug, Ger McGarry spielt Bass, Jp Dalton ist der Gitarrist und ich bin Malachy Tuohy – ich singe und schreibe Songs.
Ich und Jp kamen auf den Namen „The Riptide Movement“, als wir die Band gründeten. Ich war gerade von einem Jahr aus Australien zurückgekehrt und auf dieser Reise wäre ich fast in einer Springflut ertrunken. Dies hinterließ einen bleibenden Eindruck und ich dachte, dies wäre ein guter Name für die Band.
KKM: Kannst du dich selbst in drei Worten beschreiben?
TRM: Die Band? Rock ´n roll
KKM: Die irische Mentalität wird als frohmütig und positiv beschrieben. Transportiert ihr dies in eurer Musik? Was ist charakteristisch für eure Musik und worin siehst du den Unterschied zu deutschen Gruppen?
TRM: Die irische Mentalität ist positiv, aber so ist, unserer Erfahrung nach, auch die deutsche Mentalität, und natürlich legt sich das auch in unserer Musik wieder. Unsere Musik ist das Medium unserer Gedanken und Gefühle.
KKM: Vor allem auch durch euren Kleidungsstil werdet ihr in Deutschland der Gothic-Szene zugeschrieben. In welche Szene würdest du euch selbst einordnen?
TRM: Wir schreiben uns selbst keiner Szene und keinem Genre zu, das haben wir nie getan. Wir haben immer unser eigenes Ding gemacht und haben uns nie wirklich an irgendeiner Szene beteiligt. Unsere Musik hat viele Elemente, einschließlich Folk, Rock, Country, Pop und Indie, aber wir sind nie stehen geblieben, wir haben uns immer weiterentwickelt, was auch unserem Kleidungsstil gut tat. Ebenso ist es mit unseren Alben: Unser erstes Album, „What About The Tip Jars?“, war auf Blues basierender Rock, unser zweites Album „Keep On Keepin’ On“ war Folk- bzw. Countryrock und unser drittes Album „Getting Through“ vereint alle Elemente der vorherigen Longplayer, ist aber moderner und ausgereifter in Bezug auf das Songwriting. Es ist eine Reise, es ist unser Leben. Unsere Alben sind die Soundtracks und Standbilder aus unserem Leben.Wie wir uns selbst beschreiben, wir wollen nur Musik machen, die wir spielen gerne spielen, wobei wir uns hierbei nicht auf eine spezielle Musik beschränken, Ich denke, unsere musikalischen Vorlieben ändern sich mit unserem Lebensweg, sie reifen und entwickeln sich mit uns. Alle unsere Alben sind anders und unser viertes, an dem wir bereits arbeiten, wir ein weiterer Schritt nach vorne. Es wird mega werden!!!
KKM: Im Jahr 2014 habt ihr einen Vertrag mit Universal Music unterzeichnet. Ein weiterer großer Schritt. Was hat sich zurück gesehen auf eure Anfänge in 2009 in eurem Leben verändert? Wie weit habt ihr die Musik auch in euer Privatleben integriert?
TRM: Früher waren wir eine unabhängige, selbstverwaltete „Do It Yourself-Band“, so dass ein Großteil unserer Zeit sich auf geschäftliche Dinge beschränkte, Buchungen, Förderungen, auf der Suche nach Touren und Logistikern, die Herstellung von CDs und die Betreuung der Presse und Aktionen. Aber seit der Unterzeichnung bei Universal, können wir uns mehr auf die Musik konzentrieren. Es ist uns jetzt auch möglich, unser Album international bekannt zu machen und international zu touren. 2015 war brilliant! „Getting Through“ wurde in Großbritannien und ganz Europa veröffentlicht, so dass sich dieses Jahr fast alles ums Touren und promoten dreht. Wir haben in deutschen Stadien Rea Garvey unterstützt und Festivals in ganz Europa erlebt, einschließlich dem Eurosonic, The Great Escape, T In The Park, Benicassim, Reading & Leeds, dann das Electric Picnic am 5. September, gefolgt von dem Reeperbahn-Festival am 25. September. und im Oktober geht’s in Australien auf unsere erste Ozzy-Tour mit „Getting Through“. In Australien wird es im nächsten Monat veröffentlicht. Anschließend geht’s zurück zu einer Club-Tour durch Deutschland mit acht Terminen, beginnend im Magnet in Berlin am 4. November, bis hin zu Köln am 14. November, einschließlich dem Rollingstones Wochenende am 06. November. Wir können es nicht erwarten! „All Works Out“ und „Getting Through“ sind außerdem für den besten Song und das beste Album beim Meteors Choice Music Preis in Irland nominiert und „All Works Out wird sogar von der US-Tagesshow gespielt und wurde von den Zuschauern nominiert. Im Januar 2016 gehen wir dann nach Los Angeles um dort in den Kingsize Studios in Pasadena unser viertes Album aufzunehmen.
KKM: Ihr habt bereits ein paar Jahre Musikgeschichte hinter euch. Was ist der schönste Moment, an den du dich aus dieser Zeit erinnerst?
TRM: Es sind schon ein paar Jahre! Das erste mal ein Nummer-1-Album herauszubringen, war ein unglaubliches Gefühl, ebenso mit Bob Dylan, Neil Yound und Van Morrison zu spielen. Es ist etwas Besonderes, wenn man seinen Bandnamen auf einem Plakat der Rolling Stones liest, wenn unser Bassist mit Josh Holmes chattet und Bobby Gillespie mit dir seinen Whisky teilt und du bist auf Festivals mit den größten Bands der Welt.
KKM: „Getting Through“ ist euer 3. Album. Wie kamt ihr auf die Cover-Idee und den Titel?
TRM: Der Titel „Getting Through” steht repräsentativ für die gesamten Songs des Albums und verkörpert die Reise der Band – sowohl als Band, als auch aus privater Sicht. Wie ich bereits sagte, sind die Soundtracks Standbilder aus unserem Leben zu bestimmten Zeitpunkten. Das schöne Cover wurde zum einen durch die sehr talentierte Amy Heffernan, Gars Freundin, gezeichnet. Jede Abbildung zeigt und verkörpert die Essenz der Songs aus dem Album. Amy illustrierte das gesamte Albumcover.
KKM: Gibt es einen zentralen Grundgedanken der sich durchs Album zieht? Verarbeitest du deine eigenen Erlebnisse?
TRM: Ja, das Album hat ein zentrales Thema. Alle Themen und Emotionen der Songs beruhen auf Erfahrungen, darauf, wie man die Welt von einem bestimmten Standpunkt aus sah.
KKM: Wie entstehen deine Songtexte? Hast du einen bestimmten Ort, der dich zum Schreiben inspiriert? Nach welchen Kriterien wählst du schließlich die fertigen Songs aus?
TRM: Meine Texte entstehen aus dem Alltag heraus, aus meinen Erfahrungen, meiner Familie, meinen Freunden, aus Gesprächen heraus, inspiriert von Filmen, von der Landschaft, sie sind darüber, wie ich die Welt sehe. Das Schreiben ist ein Ventil für mich. Inspiration ist überall um uns herum und wir müssen uns dessen nur bewusst werden. Offensichtlich gibt es einige Orte, die zum Schreiben besser geeignet sind, die Umgebung ist wichtig für eine gute Energie. Aber um ehrlich zu sein, schreibe ich jeden Tag. Wenn die Ideen kommen, schreibe ich sie einfach nieder. Die Texte, die letztendlich auf die CD gekommen sind, verkörpern am besten das übergreifende Thema des Albums.
KKM: Wie wichtig sind euch eure Texte in der Musik? Sind sie eher Beiwerk?
TRM: Songtexte sind sehr wichtig. Die lyrische Tiefe beeinflusst den Ton und die Melodie des Lieder. Wie wir immer sagen, sind sie das Tragende des Songs.
KKM: Alle Songs eures Albums wirken sehr belebt. Hast du einen Favoriten? Wenn ja, welchen und warum?
TRM: Von unserer Band: „That’s life“. Es ist ein Song, der auf dem Album sein wird, an dem wir gerade arbeiten. Von anderen Bands, die wir zu hören: Foxygen „How Can You Really“ oder War on Drugs „Red Eyes“.
KKM: „Getting Through“ ist ein sehr melancholischer Song. Welche Gefühle und Gedanken stecken für dich in diesen Melodien?
TRM: Es ist ein Lied über eine Reise, Überleben und Hoffnung. Es ist melancholisch, aber es hat auch eine positive Botschaft. Es ist der Titel, der das Album am besten repräsentiert, deshalb haben wir ihn als Titelsong gewählt.
KKM: Werdet ihr zu „Getting Through“ eine Tour machen und wird sie euch nach Deutschland führen?
TRM: Ja, wie gesagt, wir sind beim Reeperbahn-Festival am 25. September dabei und spielen auch in Köln, Hamburg, München, Mannheim, Dortmund und Osnabrück. Infos zu den Terminen, Veranstaltungsorten und Karten gibt es auf www.trm.ie oder www.facebook.de/theriptidemovement.
KKM: Wir wollen dich noch besser kennen lernen: Irland ist ein sehr gläubiges Land, deshalb bist du selbst religiös?
TRM: Ich bin nicht religiös, aber ich denke, dass ich eine spirituelle Person bin.
KKM: Vervollständige den Satz – Wenn ich einen Wunsch frei hätte, dann wäre es…?
TRM: …dass unsere weltweit Führenden zusammen kommen und endlich einen sinnvollen Plan entwickeln um die Erderwärmung zu bekämpfen, bevor es zu spät ist.
KKM: Eine perfekte Partnerschaft – meine Traumfrau müsste unbedingt sein?
TRM: Emilia Clarke, Carice van Houten, Jennifer Lawrence !!!!

Interview with Malachy Tuohy from The Riptide Movement, talking about their lifes and „ Getting Through“
KKM: In the internet you can read that your story started by a television advertising. How was that? Did you know each other before and are you frieds privately? Who belongs to your band right now and how did you find your band name?
TRM: ‘All works out’ was chosen by the Bord Failte (Irish Tourist Board) for their TV ad, which was brilliant!!! It really got the song ‘All works out’ to the masses. Irish radio really jumped on board then too and the ‘Getting Through‘ album just took off from there…..ah yeah, we all grew up together and are friends from our school days. All our families are good friends and neighbours too!!!
Gar Byrne plays drums, Ger McGarry plays bass, Jp Dalton is the guitar man and I’m Malachy Tuohy – I sing and write songs.
Myself and Jp came up with the name ‘Riptide Movement’ when we formed the band. I had just returned from a year in Australia and on that trip I had almost drowned in a riptide. It left quite an impression on me and I thought it would make a good name for the band
KKM: Can you describe yourself in three words?
TRM: The band??? Rock n Roll !!!
KKM: The Irish mentality is beeing happy and positive. Do you transport this in your music? What is characteristic for your music and what do you think is the difference to German groups?
TRM: The Irish mentality is a positive one, but so too is the German mentality from our experience and of course, this always comes through in our music, it has to. We are the medium of our thoughts and emotions and our music is our outlet
KKM: Especially your clothing style let Germans count you to the Gothic scene. Which scene would you classify yourself?
TRM: We don’t really lend ourselves to any particular scene or genre, we never have. We’ve always done our own thing and have never really got involved in any scenes. Sure our music has many elements including folk, rock, country, roots, pop and indie, but we never stay still, we’re always growing, evolving and rolling and I guess our clothing style does too. Like our albums, our 1st album: ‘What About The Tip Jars?’ was blues based rock, our 2nd album: ‘Keep on keepin’ on’ was folk/country rock and our 3rd/latest album – ‘Getting Through’ has all the elements of the previous 2 albums, but is more contemporary and mature in terms of songwriting. We’ve now started working on album 4 which has evolved further than our previous 3 albums. It‘s a journey, it‘s our lives and our albums are the soundtracks and still frames from our lives.
Regarding how we would classify ourselves, we only want to play music we like playing and we wouldn’t be set to a certain genre of music. I think your musical tastes change with you on your life’s journey and our sound matures and evolves with us. Our 3 albums have all been different and album 4 is taking that one step forward. It’s going to be mega!!!
KKM: In 2014 you signed your contract with Universal Music. Another big step. What has changed in your life when you see your beginnings in 2009? Did you integrated the music into your private life?
TRM: A lot has changed. We used to be an independent, self managed, self promoted, Do It Yourself band, so a lot of our time was spent on the business side of things, booking shows, promoting shows, looking after tours and logistics, making cds and looking after press and promotions, but since signing to Universal, it‘s allowed us to concentrate more on the music and playing than the business side. It‘s also given us the opportunity to release our album internationally and tour internationally.
2015 has been brilliant so far! ‘Getting Through’ was released in the UK and throughout Europe, so most of 2015 has been all about touring and promoting the album there. We’ve played stadiums in Germany supporting Rea Garvey, which was amazing, festivals across Europe including Eurosonic, The Great Escape, T In The Park, Benicassim, we’re playing Reading & Leeds for the first time later this month, then Electric Picnic on 5th September followed by Reeperbahn Festival on 25 Sept. We’re also going to the land down under in October for our first Ozzy tour, ‘Getting Through’ is being released in Australia next month! We then return for an 8 date headline club tour of Germany, commencing at Magnet, Berlin on 4th November through to Cologne on 14 November and including Rollingstone Weekender on 6 November, can’t wait!! ‘All works out’ and ‘Getting Through’ were also nominated for best song and album at this year’s Meteors Choice Music Prize in Ireland which was a big highlight and ‘All works out’ is currently been used by the Today Show in the US as their theme music for their trailers!!! Then in Jan 2016 we’re going to Los Angeles to record album 4 at Kingsize Studios, Pasadena!!
KKM: You already have a few years of musical history behind you. What’s the best moment you remember?
TRM: There‘s been a few! Achieving a number 1 album for the first time was an amazing feeling, playing with Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison was very special too. When you see the band’s name on posters with The Rolling Stones, Josh Holmes and your bass player having a chat, when Bobby Gillespie is sharing whiskey with ye and you’re on festivals with the biggest bands in the world..
KKM: „Getting Through“ is your third album. How did you find the cover idea and the title?
TRM: The title ‘Getting Through’ best represented the entire catalogue of songs from the album and it also embodies the band‘s journey so far, both as a band and individually in our personal lives, as I said earlier, an album is the soundtrack and still frames from our lives at that particular time. The beautiful artwork was firstly hand drawn by the very talented Amy Heffernan (Gar the drummer’s girlfriend). Each illustration represents and perfectly embodies the essence of each song from the album. Amy then put her illustrations into graphics and designed the entire album cover and sleeve.
KKM: Is there a central idea which runs through the album? Processed your own experiences?
TRM: Yes, the album has a central theme and both the lyrics and music touch on these themes and issues. All the issues and emotions the songs touch on are written from expierence and from a point of view as to how I see the world.
KKM: How do you find your lyrics? Do you have a specific place that inspires you to write? What criteria let you choose the finishing songs for the cd?
TRM: I find my lyrics from everyday life. It’s an outlet for me, from my expierences, my famlily and my friends, from conversations, paintings, films, from the landscape, from the way I see the world. Inspiration is all around us, we just need to become aware of it.
Obviously some places are better than others to write and landscape is important for good energy, but to be honest, I write every day, when the ideas come, I write them down.
The lyrics that made the final album / cd were from the songs / lyrics that best fitted and embodied the overall theme of the album.
KKM: How important are your lyrics in the music? Are the more like accessories?
TRM: Lyrics are very important. The lyrical depth always comes down to the tone and melody of the song, as we always say ‘serve the song first and foremost’
KKM: Do you have a favorite new song? If so, which and why?
TRM: From our band? ‘Thats life’. It‘s a song that‘s gonna be on our next album which we’re currently working on at the moment.
From bands we’re listening too? Foxygen ‘How Can You Really’ or War on Drugs ‘Red Eyes’
KKM: „Getting Through” is a very melancholic song. What feelings and thoughts are in it?
TRM: It‘s a song about a journey, survival and hope. It‘s melancholic but it also has a positive message, as I said earlier, it‘s the song that best represents the album as a body of work and that’s why it was chosen as the title track.
KKM: Will there be a „Getting Through“-Tour? And will you come to Germandy?
TRM: Yes, as mentioned, we’re performing at Reeperbahn Festival on 25th September and then have an 8 date tour in November, starting in Berlin on 4th November. We’re also playing Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Mannheim, Dortmund and Osnabruck and we’ll also be performing at Rollingstone Weekender on 6th November. KKM: We want to get to know you even better: Ireland is a very orthodox country, therefore are you religious?
TRM: I’m not religious but I consider myself to be a spiritual person.
KKM: Complete the set – If I had one wish, it would be …?
TRM: For our global leaders to get together and take a meaningful stand to combat global warming before it‘s too late..
KKM: A perfect partnership – my dream woman would necessarily …?
TRM: Emilia Clarke, Carice van Houten, Jennifer Lawrence !!!!
