Golden Apes Album “Our Ashes At The End Of The Day”!

…A grey is violently occupying a strangely bend sky, whose only resigning consequence is to give freea bustling swarm of quietly falling snow, pacifying and cleaning, rioting and serving. Causalities and the blurred edges of a milk-white spot up there, consequences and the fallacious certainty of a definedstate of the mind…

And while all this happens outside my window (and surely all the other things too), I´m privileged with listening to the first chords of “Our Ashes At The End Of The Day”, the 11th studio album of Golden Apes.
And when slowly the in- and the outside merge in one full-frame panorama, spanning horizons and zeniths, heads and nadirs, I have to admit that I´m quite glad about it…

4 years had to pass since the release of „KASBEK“ (2019), their most prominent, successful and (in my humble opinion) sonically outstanding album and looking back, the intuition of a caesura felt legit in some way. There were a lot of upheavals and splits in the days to come, new directions and uncertainties and being an observer of the band for quite a while I sensed all their following musical signs of life (the “Satori” single, the “From The Sky” EP and the delightfully unexpected “Grey” track) as what they obviously were: explorations, observations, geographical adjustments…warping boundaries.

And while listening to “Our Ashes At The End Of The Day” everything makes sense, everything falls into
place. Here´s so much I was missing, here´s so much I didn´t expect.
Every single moment on the album feels so coherent, so convincing and dense that it takes a second to get
used to the gravity of musical texture. And if you urgently need to find a consistency in the bands´ musical
output then this is definitely the absence of it. There´s no way of presaging any compositional direction, no
way of being prepared for any possible atmospheric setting.

The grandeur of “Fourteen Rivers”, the joyfully compelling resignation of “Ash Trees”, the warming bleakness of “Shine”, “All Of Her”´s stained and napped drive and the heavyweight punch of “The Moment I fell”… there are so many facets, so many turns to take and so much joy in entrusting you blindly to the flow of the sound and the cluelessness where it will take you to…

There´s a line I read recently and this springs to my mind right now…” Whence mine eyes didst roam o‘er
yon expansive land, I discerned ‚tis the loftiest pinnacle of the earth, and the profoundest vale wherein I
hath ever trod.“
Surely no coincidence….
Outside a sky has cleared up. In a good way.

Review Golden Apes

Auf geht’s, hier mein Review der neuen „Platte“ der Golden Apes – Out The End Of The Day!

Der erste Song läuft , ein schönes Intro, 30 Sekunden Einstimmung in den ersten Song „Forteen Rivers“, dann geht’s mit schönen Drums in das wirklich gut produzierte Lied, ab 1:30 min geht’s dann richtig los, der Sound wird voller, die Instrumente mehr, ab der zweiten Minute startet dann die dunkle Stimme des Sängers in einen Song der etwas an die „Fields“ erinnert und wie einige andere Bands klingt, die man so als Gitarrenbands aus der Szene kennt. Dennoch hat das ganze etwas Schönes eigenes. Komischerweise gefällt mir das Schlagzeug besonders gut im Ohr, klingt wirklich gut.

Der Titelsong beginnt „fröhlicher“, wenn man das so sagen darf…*glucks
Schöne Gitarren und wieder dieses wunderbare Schlagzeug, alles gut zusammengebracht und doch noch etwas unspektakulär irgendwie.

„Shine“ ist der Name des dritten Songs, das passt, Gitarre und Stimme in sphärischen Klängen beginnen bevor, ja, schon wieder, das großartige Drum einsetzt, dieser Song wirkt, bisher mein liebster auf dem Album, geht gut ins Ohr und macht „Spaß“. Etwas mehr Druck in den „Schrei“ – Teilen der Stimme des Songs hätte hier sogar noch mehr bewirkt, aber es ist clean und bleibt clean und das ist wahrscheinlich gut so.

„Ash Trees“ beginnt „zart“ mit Samples und Sticks, dann Keys, bei genau einer Minute, beginnt die Stimme, alles ist hier wieder genau berechnet, alles stimmig und ohne Fehler, geht!

Okay, es ist schon alles sehr ähnlich was ich hier höre, „Reflections“ , na was soll ich sagen, es ist wieder schön sauber und düster, hat tolle Gitarren, Drums und Stimme, hmmm…

….also weiter, schöner Start diesmal bei „All Of Her (Totem)“ , die Gitarre macht ne andere Stimmung, das tut gut, die immer gleiche Stimme macht was sie soll und das Drum ist noch da, cool, man kann das alles schön hören.

„Bigotry (And Still)“ hat wieder ein 30 Sek. Intro. Der Aufbau hat sich wohl bewährt. Der Song an sich hat mehr Gefühl, hier kann man weniger Kälte spüren, der Song ist sogar wunderbar, klar, wie bei allen Songs ist es sauber produziert, manchmal denkt man das alles könnte mehr „Dreck“ und „Schräge“ vertragen, aber das ist ja Geschmackssache, wie immer. Diesen Song mag ich jedenfalls auch!

Der letzte Song auf dem Album nennt sich „The Moment I Fell“, die Stimme bricht hier wirklich mal erfreulich aus der einheitlichen Tonlage aus, es klingt aber nun noch etwas mehr mach Nephilim“, aber …..macht nix, geile Band, hier gibt’s sogar was Dreck in der Stimme, ich mag es sehr, klingt gleich “echter“ Großartig! Perfekter Song!

Fazit:

Ein sauber produziertes Album, fehlerfrei und mit bestem Sound, manchmal etwas zu clean, aber so soll es wohl auch sein, gute Musiker machen hier genau das was sie können, das wird sicher viele Leute erfreuen!
