Unify Separate’s new EP ‘Heavy Meta’ digs deep and delivers the drama

‘Heavy Meta’, the new release from Stockholm synth duo Unify Separate, is five-track EP full of switchback turns, swinging between poles of self-loathing and self-affirmation, revenge and compassion, and love and regret.

The EP’s opener ‘Dark Heaven’ channels the classic 80s synthpop of Depeche Mode and transgressive dancefloor delights, second song ‘Detox’ is a Radio head In Rainbows-era punky electro voyage of self-discovery, third number ‘Gaslighted’ is thumping slice of electronic pop payback reminiscent of Zola Jesus, while ‘Excuses Excuses’ and ‘Return to Exile’ bring it all home swathed in Moderat-style anthemic bursts of anger and sorrow.

‘Heavy Meta’ is the latest bold move on Unify Separate’s upward trajectory, Leo Josefsson and Andrew Montgomery build on the momentum created by two strong albums, a string of impressive singles and dozens of thrilling live shows, by blending the group’s trademark sense of drama with a deeper and harder sound.

The ‘Heavy Meta’ EP is released on all major streaming platforms on 11th April 2025 Unify Separate has been confirmed as one of the acts for the 2025 edition of the pres tigious Amphi Festival, which takes place in Cologne, Germany in July, and in August will be sharing a stage with Swedish synth prophets Priest in Jönköping, Sweden.

ReviewHeavy Meta”

„Unify Separate’s “Heavy Meta” is an impressive fusion of self-reflection and dance beats. The Swedish-Scottish duo, Montgomery and Josefsson, turn personal challenges into a captivating sonic experience that encourages you to dance and think. Their combination of emotional depth and refined pop sound gives the album a special quality.

The EP’s title, “Dark Heaven,” transports the listener into a dimension of seduction and risk. This bittersweet combination reflects the conflict between the desire for closeness and the fear of losing oneself. Andrew Montgomery’s gripping vocals amplify this journey, highlighting the ambiguity of the lyrics.

The recurring plea “take me with you” – the risky pull of addiction. The music combines 80s synth-pop with modern elements, creating a mysteriously seductive soundscape that invites you to dance.

Healing is a process that goes its own way. Denial is eradicated, truths that otherwise remain hidden come to light.

“Detox” is a wake-up call, a reminder that the fantastical temptations offer short-term solace, but the poison must be fought with confrontation. It’s a haunting testament to the fact that without pain, deep growth is not possible.

“Gaslighted” is a powerful reminder of how personal experiences are tainted by society’s manipulation. Individuals can and must fight back, always, and the particularly dark synthesizers reflect what, yes, I call it, war. This is where “Gaslighted stands out as an anthem. The song appeals to all those who have ever felt their perception and reality are being challenged, which makes it a comprehensible and encouraging piece.

“Excuses Excuses’ shows a changed backdrop. The minimalist approach here is striking. Calm, unfiltered anxiety, switches to seething underground, revealing a resigned acceptance of the given circumstances. Feelings like disillusionment and exhaustion, the grinding repetition amplifying disappointment. The protagonist is trapped in a never-ending loop of self-reflection and inner criticism. The silence, I’m sure, has been in such a place before. Amid the heaviness of the subject matter, “Refuge in a Dream” radiates a spark of hope. That dream is also a driving force. Despite the cynicism.

“Return to exile” – personal autonomy. Leaving – memories and feelings remain; distancing is denouncing.

Montgomery’s voice has an incredible depth. The interplay clearly shows that distance can be chosen, but emotional bonds remain inextricably linked to the fabric of one’s own memories. The last curtain falls, silence recedes.

Independence at last. You always have a choice.

Heavy Meta” is an incredible statement – every second.
