TO THE NORTH IS OUT!

to-the-north-300

On “To the North”, Kari Rueslåtten has brought a darker–edged atmosphere to her acoustic, melancholic Norwegian folk. She has created a soundtrack of the North, which bring herself, and her listeners, back “home”. “I´m interested in creating emotions in the listener, and mental resting places that allow people to close their eyes and transcend to a different environment”, she said. “For me, I like music that creates images in my head that unfold into new stories and new worlds, and invariably these are my home, and the landscapes of the North”.

Kari Rueslåtten releases The Byrds’ classic with a Nordic melancholic sound

One year ago, Kari Rueslåtten released the highly rated album ”Time to Tell”. Now she is ready with the first taste of her 6th studio album. The single is a cover version of the The Byrds’ big hit ”Turn, turn, turn”, and will be released May 21st.

”Turn, turn, turn” is given a Nordic melancholic sound; build around Kari Rueslåtten magnificent voice. Inspired by the fjords and mountains of Norway, Kari Rueslåtten has made a version of the song that gives you time to think and space to breathe.

“Turn, turn, turn” is originally written by the songwriter legend Pete Seeger, but it was The Byrds that made the song into a number one hit in 1965.

“Turn, turn, turn is the #1 hit with the oldest lyrics, as it is taken from the Book of Ecclesiastes. It is a philosophic lyric, which reflects that there is a time and place for everything; ‘To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.’ The Byrds’ version of the song is up-tempo and has a quite happy sound. We have made a darker and more melancholic version, and the tempo is taken down significantly. I think the lyrics stand out really well”, Kari says.

It was Olavsfestdagene, a big festival in Kari’s hometown Trondheim, that wanted Kari to make her own version of the song to the opening ceremony of the festival 28th of July.

“Olavsfestdagene, the great festival in my hometown, wanted me to do a version of the song. The theme for this year’s festival is ‘time’, and Turn, turn, turn fits perfectly is that respect. When the festival contacted me, we were in the middle of the recordings of the upcoming album. Making this cover version of Turn, turn, turn became a truly creative process inspired by the sound of the album we were working with. I was never in doubt that the song also had to be a part of the album.”

As an artist, Kari Rueslåtten has developed a unique melancholic sound within alternative folk-pop. Her desire is to find the beauty hiding in the dark.

“I make music that I’d liked to listen to myself. I try creating a mood in the songs, which allows people to listen to their own thoughts. It’s not exactly happy, up-tempo songs I normally write, but I would say it’s more melancholic than dark”, Kari explains with a smile.

Turn, turn, turn is recorded in Parr Street Studio in Liverpool, and arranged by Kari Rueslåtten together with the musicians Jostein Ansnes, Richard Turvey, Steve Pilgrim and Martyn Campbell. It’s produced by Jostein Ansnes.

Kari was one of the founder members of the progressive doom metal band The 3rd and the Mortal. The band was a source of inspiration for many other bands worldwide, among them Nightwish and The Gathering. After leaving The 3rd and the Mortal in 1995 she has released five studio albums; Spindelsinn (1997), Mesmerized (1998), Pilot (2001), Other people’s stories (2004) and Time to Tell (2014). In 2014 and 2015 she has toured Europe and Latin America with The Sirens – a project she has together with Anneke van Giersbergen (ex The Gathering) and Liv Kristine (ex Theatre of Tradgedy).

Kari’s natural talent combined with classical training and roots in the Norwegian folk music tradition has resulted in a voice that is difficult to describe. Her music has been compared with artists like Tori Amos and Kate Bush, maybe not necessarily because the music sounds very similar, but because these are artists who sing with their own distinct voices. Just like Kari Rueslåtten.
