BIO

Nino Sable is an individual whose artistic range spans myriad styles and draws on a wide range of influences. It would be a mistake to pigeonhole him as he morphs, chameleon-like from one character to another, seamlessly crossing the traditional constraints and barriers constructed by society.

But there is history behind Nino Sable which explains much of what you see and hear today. Nino Sable grew up between Portugal and Germany and played in a lot of bands in both countries. The genesis of his musical journey was in the nineties, starting out with garage bands playing grunge, rock, metal, soul, (…) but he soon grew tired of the formulaic and restrictive nature of these projects.

In 1999 he struck out on his own with his first solo project called Melanculia. Melanculia was an independent venture which captured the spirit of the time and, after a chance encounter, he invited Din-Tah Aeon to be a part of his vision. There was an immediate connection between the musicians which resulted in the birth of Aeon Sable in 2010, a band which some have labelled gothic rock, some gothic metal, but Nino cares not for the label, only for the immersion in the experience.

In 2021, Nino decided to release music under his own name. The first creative output was titled THE AHHH in June, featuring electronic instrumentation.

To date, Nino Sable has released two solo albums (2023) and two albums, one featuring Lars Kappeler (Sedate/Seduce, 2021) and another one featuring Dos Asmund (The Deutsch EP, 2024).
Nino Sable is also recognized as the vocalist for the gothic rock bands Aeon Sable and Unwished.

Interview with Nino Sable

I asked Nino a few questions, but not just about the new album. I’ve been enthusiastic about his music for a long time, not only because he always pulls something new out of his hat, but also because it takes me into a completely different world every time. Now have fun reading and get curious:-)

Where are you located and what are the vibes like musically there?

I am living in Germany right now, in Essen (Ruhr Area) to be precise. I don’t know a lot about the musical vibes outside of my studio. Sometimes I go on parties, mostly gothic and post-punk oriented. You can meet me from time to time at the Lost Sounds party at Bahnhof Langendreer.

Has the places you’ve lived inspired you differently or brought unique challenges to you as an artist?

I guess that living in the Metropole Ruhr has certainly been inspiring due to the fact that it is a somehow overpopulated and filthy region. At least compared to Portugal… The Ruhr Area has a certain coal (mine) history and… the grandparents of a lot of people living here had been working below the ground. Combining all that, you’ll fast encounter here a perfect ground for dark, electronic music.

How did the creative process differ for this latest release than older ones?

The first thing I did this time was to define a preset setup to be used in every song. Usually, I don’t work with a preset setup but since “the deutsch EP” I decided to do so, because it makes producing so much easier and faster. What I was doing before, until “Thorns I” & “Thorns II” was absolute overkill. Defining all sounds every time from the scratch for each song. In this specific case (the soul) I would like to mention that the whole album was done in solely 15 days. From the first recordings, the writing of the immersive story, to the final audio mastering, artwork, etc…

What themes/stories run through your latest album?

The soul is an interactive trip. You can listen to the music while you can accompany the listening with the reading of the fictional story about the creation of the album. The whole story takes place in Bottrop (Germany) and remembers a little bit of a trip on LSD. Basically the album is a concept album and you’ll notice it, when you press play. You’ll discover that this album is completely different from all my other releases. It is calm but dark. Sometimes it sounds like jazz in a very dark way, other times it may remind you of the soundtrack of a Jim Jarmush movie. It is trip music.

What do you feel is the most emotional track you’ve ever written?

I love the good old stuff I did once with melanculia (back in 2010…) probably “long road out of hell” will forever be my favorite song. But the newer ones (unwished, Aeon Sable or even some of the releases I did with nino sable) are also very nice.

Three records guaranteed to evoke emotion for you?

Euroshima – Matando Sueños, Cassiopeia – On either side of dreams, Iggy Pop – Naughty little doggie.

Can you talk about the current single and the next one? How do they fit into the message of the new album?

The (soul) singles I made available on Bandcamp are just placeholders. The album is a masterpiece and has to be listened on its own in a (w)hole.

How do you balance time between your profession, your creative work and family? Is the discipline in balancing a challenge?

I spend 95% of my time working on my own stuff. I should have some more discipline, but my time of living is precious and making music (…) is the best way to spend my time on earth.

How important is literature to you as an artist?

I love reading. Reading is the engine for good lyrics. It makes me dream beyond borders and find the right words for my own nightmares.

Favorite cities to visit or perform in?

For now it is Athens!

Favorite journeys as an artist?

Porto was awesome!

What scares you?

People. And their beliefs.

Are there any locations on the globe where you would like to retire to & that you think would be inspiring as long as you live?

One day I want to be far away from all the rush. Living here is twice as expensive (in all means) than in a small village in a sunny country.

Name a song that can make you cry. Have you ever cried after you created a song or during the process? If so, what song?

Sometimes, when I miss Portugal a lot, I cry when I perform “fabulous land”.

What was the last great record you heard?

I really adored Iggy Pops cooperation with the Queens of the Stone Age. They released one album called Post Pop Depression.

Motto?

Live and let live

What have you planned in the coming months ?

less “art” and more “work”.

Thank you for your time and your uniqueness:-)
